Syrian Displaced Glances

2021 | KURDISTAN, SYRIA

Daily moments in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, nine years after the start of the Rojava Revolution. A revolt started by the Kurdish people with a conciliatory and inclusive project that has allowed the addition of Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians and other ethnic and religious minorities within its borders, where hundreds of thousands of displaced people by the Syrian civil war are also stranded.

Located in an ISIS-controlled area until 2015, the Washokani camp is home to nearly 15,000 Syrian displaced people.

Born as a peace proposal during the war, the Kurdish political project is based on democratic confederalism: direct democracy, feminism and religious freedom. Since its inception in 2012, there have been many external destabilization attempts to conclude it, like the expansion of Islamic State or the Turkish occupation.

More than 13 million people have been forced to flee their homes with the war. 200.000 of them still live in refugee camps in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) waiting to come back home. A desire opposed to the increasingly entrenched war situation.

Yellow Vests Movement

2019 | PARIS, FRANCE

The Yellow Vest Movement was a protest struggle that began in France on November 17, 2018, which arose from the citizens' anger over rising fuel prices and rates. The Yellow Vests blocked roads and caused weekly traffic chaos for about a year until meeting some of their demands.

These analog pictures were taken in Paris during the ‘Acte VIII’.

Police brutality became a common practice for security forces in cracking down the protests. The European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the UN denounced the excessive use of force by Emmanuel Macron's executive.

About 3 million people took part in the demonstrations. After months of protest President Emmanuel Macron accepted some of the movement’s claims by giving up the increase of fuel taxes and announcing new social measures for the middle and lower classes.

Zionist Demonstration of Jerusalem

2019 | JERUSALEM, ISRAEL (OCCUPIED PALESTINE)

During the Six-Day War of 1967 Israel conquered East Jerusalem, under Jordanian rule, thus taking complete control of the city. Since then, Zionist demonstrations have been taking place annually around the Jerusalem Old City to commemorate such an event under a heavy police device.

The Arab population from the Old City is forcibly displaced during these marches. Among Zionist chants and some despective messages, the Arabs cannot move around the streets and homes that goes from the Damascus Gate to the Wailing Wall.

Post-Yugoslavian Balkans

2017-2020 | BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, KOSOVO, SERBIA, CROATIA, MONTENEGRO

With the 1990's Yugoslav Wars and the subsequent dissolution of the socialist state, a new political and geographical reality redefined the Balkans. 25 years later, several analog street pictures taken during some of my Balkans hitchhiking trips illustrate the intimate rutine of the zone.

Much of the nationalist rift that originated the war stemmed from religious diversity among Catholic Christians, Orthodox Christians, and Muslims. Different faiths that still today separate regions between looks with suspicion.

Several public companies from the Yugoslavian period were privatized with the arrival of capitalism, making them collapse after few years. The actual unemployment around the Balkans flourishes many nostalgic memories of the socialist epoch.

The Palestinian Occupation

2019 | WEST BANK, PALESTINE

In the city of Hebron, southern West Bank, several Israeli checkpoints delimit the Arab neighborhoods from the Jewish ones. The Arab market, covered with a grate, is often discriminated against with garbage, debris and acid thrown from Jewish homes. Israeli checkpoints near Arab terraces are also a cause of friction and conflict. Various analogue pictures illustrate the daily life of the Arab quarters in both Hebron, Bethlehem and Ramallah.
